Competing organizations submit a strategic plan and/or business plan to demonstrate their proof of concept and implementation strategy, and organizations are evaluated based on CBI Criteria. CBI invests in organizations with innovative resource mobilization strategies to spark a movement away from traditional grant-writing and towards sustainability. 

Winners receive funding and are linked into our global network of social entrepreneurs—an opportunity to collaborate and learn from CBI winners all over the world. Winners also receive training and consulting services from our partners to build capacity and access media publicity channels.

Since 1997, CBI has received more than 3,500 proposals from organizations in countries all over the world including Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Peru, Spain, South Africa, and Thailand. In some regions, CBI works with McKinsey & Co, to run these hybrid CBI Business Plan Competitions.
